Coverage

Curtice Brothers Co. Preservers was founded in 1868 by brothers Simeon and Edgar Curtice in Rochester, NY. The concept of their business grew from the need to preserve surplus fruits and vegetables that they could not sell in their grocery store. By the 1900s, they were the largest ketchup and preserves firm, and their signature blue label allowed them to stand out amongst competitors. Their product eventually fell off the market when the FDA banned the use of benzoate in food and beverage products. However, Curtice Brothers Co. have revived their company and produce an array of organic sauces that are available today.
This artifact is of great importance because it provides an estimated date of when this site was active, and gives us insight into what this location was used for. The presence of a ketchup bottle suggests that the Stanley Park site could have been a factory, restaurant, or family residence.
