In the Record Of American Uniform And Historical Buttons, by Alphaeus H. Albert, Section NA 131, there is a picture with four types of buttons (including one similar to this artifact). NA 131 - A is described as “the device with anchor rope passing to the right and over the stock” or B “similar device with rope passing under the stock (there are many variants).” According to this information, the placement of the rope on Naval button faces identifies the rank suggesting that this is Chief Petty Officer button (Naval).
